Doris Haire is an internationally known consumer advocate in the field of childbearing. In 1972 she founded the International Childbirth Education Association, an organisation of childbirth consumers and professionals committed to family-centered maternity care. She has been actively involved in campaigns to have maternity consumer’s interests considered by the Federal Food and Drug Adminstration and has given evidence at a number of Congressional hearings. She was also instrumental in having legislation enacted in New York state that requires all hospitals to publish their intervention rates for birth annually.
