Mission Statement

Mission Statement

Every woman expecting a baby has the right to full and accurate information concerning the choices and options in maternity care available to her. Making decisions, solving problems, developing confidence and trust in innate birthing abilities, learning about resources and promoting personal flexibility are all skills needed by parents raising children.

The childbirth educator has a vital role in both the provision of information to parents during pregnancy, and in enabling parents to develop their skills. Devising effective educational programs, based on client needs and using a variety of teaching and presentation strategies is central to the approach of the professional childbirth educator. An extensive background knowledge is an essential element, together with a thorough understanding of the scientific literature on appropriate maternity care.

This training course is grounded in the basic philosophy that:

  • Pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding are normal biological functions for women and babies.
  • Interventions in this process must be based on a proven medical need and backed by scientific evidence of safety and efficacy.
  • The woman is central to this process and her wishes, needs and desires must form the basis of her care.
  • The parents have a right to know about all aspects of their care, so that informed decisions can be made and full consent given when assistance is needed.
  • Support for parents, as they make decisions and fulfil their parenting roles, is essential for the health and well-being of the family.
