The Birth of Neko Pilara

This film of a completely natural birth beautifully illustrates how instinctive women can be when given complete freedom. As the pregnancy gradually develops into labour, we witness the strengthening contractions and the mother's responses, as she moves, alters positions, and focuses on the work her body is doing. She is attended by two midwives, her partner and friends, who all provide unobtrusive support, both at home and then in hospital. The birth is filmed from an unusual angle, as the mother kneels in a lunging position on the floor. The arrival of the placenta is shown and also the stitching of a tear. With no voice over commentary and very clear images, the viewer is able to experience the magic of normal birth.
