Book Review

Evidence for the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding

World Health Organisation

Return to Evidence for the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding

Presented in large paperback form, this book presents an extensive review of all the research that supports each of the WHO "Ten steps to successful breastfeeding".

The book presents a chapter on each of the Ten Steps, with each chapter divded into several subtitles including the necessary criteria for each step, followed by a brief introduction and discussion on all of the relevant points for that step finishing with a succinct conclusion. Each chapter also includes several tables summarising and comparing the latest research findings supporting each of the "Ten Steps".

For example, Step 8, Breastfeeding on Demand - firstly discusses the criteria that meets 'demand feeding' followed by an introduction to theoretical background behind this step. The chapter then examines the research behind frequency and length of suckling after birth, the effect of unrestricted breastfeeding and other outcomes followed by a brief conclusion

This book is essential reading for those studying a lactation course or planning on completing the IBCLC exam. It would also be helpful to student midwives in learning about the rationale behind the "Ten Steps". Also an essential resource for any hospital maternity unit working toward becoming "Baby Friendly" or for those reviewing and updating hospital breastfeeding policies.

While providing extensive information for all professionals working with breastfeeding women, I would not recommend this book for expectant or new parents.
