Applicants who hold other appropriate qualifications may apply
for exemption from part of the Graduate Diploma Course. All
such requests will be considered on their merits, and must be supported by:

  • Statements detailing the qualifications to be considered, witnessed by a JP.
  • Copies of degrees, diplomas or certificates, as necessary, also witnessed by a JP.
  • Course attendance certificates as necessary.

Application for recognition of prior learning (RPL) must be made at the time of enrolment in the Course. Candidates who acquire qualifications whilst completing the Graduate Diploma may apply for exemption for a later component of the Course. However, the application must be submitted at least three months before they would normally undertake that section of the Course.

Self Study Program

Anatomy and Physiology

  • Sit an entrance exam and achieve 95% in Part A (definitions) and 70% in Part B (general paper).

Pregnancy

  • Qualified dieticians are exempt from answering questions 1, 2 and 3, but must answer all other questions.
  • Physiotherapists are exempt from answering questions 4, 6, 7 and 8, but must answer all other questions.

Postnatal

  • No exemptions, this is a compulsory unit.

Maternity Care

  • No exemptions, this is a compulsory unit.

Teaching Adults

  • Those who have completed an accredited course in adult education are exempt.

Introductory Workshop

  • Attendance at an Active Birth workshop in the twelve months prior to application for the Course.

Six-day Workshop

  • No exemptions, this is a compulsory unit.

Examination

  • No exemptions, this is a compulsory unit.

Observations

Introduction to hospital practices

  • Midwives who can show proof of continuous employment in all areas of a maternity unit during the three years prior to application for the Course are exempt.

Pre-natal classes

  • Proof of teaching/leading or observing three pre-natal class groups in the twelve months prior to application for the Course.

Three births

  • Proof of attendance at three births as a support person (not as an attending midwife) in the two years prior to application for the Course.

Birth Centre and of a home birth

  • Proof of having worked as an independent midwife or as a midwife in a Birth Centre for at least six months in the three year period prior to application for the Course.

Lactation

  • Qualified Lactation Consultants are exempt. Certified copy of IBLCE Certificate required.

Early Childhood Health Services

  • Qualified Early Childhood Nurses who can provide proof of continuous employment in this area during the three years prior to application in the Course are exempt.

Women’s Health and Support Services

  • Nurses with Family Planning Certificates and Women’s Health Nurses with appropriate qualifications are exempt, providing they can show proof of continuous employment in this area during the three years prior to application for the Course.

Supervised Teaching

First series

  • No exemptions are allowed for the first fully supervised series. This is a compulsory Unit.

Subsequent series

  • Provided that the first series of supervised classes has been assessed as satisfactory, applicants who have been teaching pre-natal classes continuously for three years (a minimum of 15 series of classes) prior to application in the Course, may be exempted from the subsequent three series.

Presentation Skills Unit

  • No exemptions, this is a compulsory unit.
