Birth International endeavours to provide a high level of training and education to those involved in maternity care. We are therefore pleased to be able to share a selection of the testimonials received from the wide range of people who attend our workshops and events. Active Birth workshop
I along with my fellow lincolm midwives attended your workshop in warwick. It has revolutionised our midwifery practise and tomorrow we have our own active birth workshop for our fellow midwives. Wish us luck. If we are half as inspirational as you it will be good! These days i can't wait to get to work. thank you andrea Active Birth workshop
I attended Andreas workshop last weekend in Warwick with four other colleagues. We have gone back to our unit in Lincoln and taken the place by storm!!! The beds are moved, I have placed a large amount of information relating to active birth on our "Taking normality forward" board, our labour ward tour is changing as from this Sunday, the dates are filling up for a new parent workshop I had alreadt planned and there has been a massive change in moral and practice in just the last five days. Even the doubting thomases have had to admit there must be something in it with the increase in either reduced analgesia or drug-free normal births many amongst primips. You can almost feel the excitement and eagerness in the air. I am currently the leader on a 6 month project to take forward normality and felt that the workshop would be a turning point. I had no idea though what a profound effect it would have on the five of us who attended and how quickly it could grow within the unit. We all feel like different midwives and if the growth and change within our labour ward, unit and community continues then we will truly have made a real move towards women centred care. Thank you Andrea for relighting our passion and belief in midwifery and the wonder of pregnancy and birth. Active Birth workshop
Hi Andrea, Just thought I would let you know what has been happening in Geraldton since your Active Birth Workshop. There has been such a positive change in our unit. Basically almost all of the midwives immediately put the skills they learnt to good use. Those that did not really want to change their practice probably felt so much pressure from the masses, that they no longer had a choice. Here is a summary of our observation of the change in our practice; A obvious drop in intervention rates (rarely do vacuums or forceps) A large reduction in epidurals (from 18 in some months down to 3-4). Most of the epidurals are used for caesereans. Pethidine is now used very infrequently (in fact we find ourselves needing to justify why it was given!!). Use of hot water (showers, hot packs, hot towels) in the majority of labours. Most women labour vertically and are encouraged to stay off the bed. Many vertical births. More success with breastfeeding outcomes Better birth experiences Several of the midwives were already doing these things but what was so great about bringing the workshop to us, was the unity that developed amongst the midwives afterwards. We are always praising each other for the great births our clients are now having. I feel it has brought us a little closer together. I thought you would value this feedback Andrea. Thankyou so much for the great effort you put into making positive changes in midwifery care. Active Birth workshop
The tutor is so informatove, intersting and knowledgeable an knew her subject and audience so well. She is an
excellent communicator. Would like to spend at least one month listening and working with Andrea dealing with her
clients. Would like to see all midwives in Ireland and this hospital attending her workshop. Looking forward to
reading her books and spreading the "Gospel of Andrea" everywhere I go.
Active Birth workshop Andrea was an excellent Course Leader. Both days were refreshing and stimulating, they put my chosen career of midwifery back in perspective, reminding me of my student days just 2 1/2 years ago. With my colleagues we learned with passion all about the wonderful process of birthing. Unfortuantely, it didn't take long for me to realise that reality was far from the ideal situation in which I would like to care for women. Since qualifying I have worked in an institution that imposes policies and rules on midwives, thus disempowering them and making it hard for them to be enabled to empower the women for whom they care. Its easy to lose sight of goals under the heap of rules, regulations and the politics surrounding birth, all to the detriment of being an advocate for women. I feel listening to Andrea speaking so convincingly was just what I needed to put me back on track. To honestly be "with women" is a mammoth challenge for midwives working under present constraints and pressures. But I shall quietly get on with it, behind closed doors. I would like to see people like Andrea infiltrating our Schools and Colleges of Education inspiring the new blood that is coming into the profession and empowering student midwives who are firstly women/mothers and secondly midwives. There is great value in preaching to the converted but power in preaching to those that need to be converted for the philosophy of active birth. Andrea, I want to thank you very much for a wonderful few days. Congratulations on your wonderful work and all the very best for the future. Hope to see you again soon.
Active Birth workshop I asked a colleague what Andrea's sessions were like and her reply was "be prepared to be blown away". She was right! I will endeavour to carry on her philosophies as will my colleagues.
Teaching Active Birth workshop I often go to workshops/study days and feel that I have learnt very little. I'm conscious of having had a real knowledge boost today - it feels like a brain spring clean - thank you, Andrea
Teaching Skills workshop It was probably the best and most useful workshop I have ever attended.
Teaching Skills for Educators Your relaxed teaching style and sensitivity towards group members is something I would like to emulate. Thank you for all your ideas and help. It fulfilled many needs. I am sure there will be more down the track!
Empowering Midwives workshop Andrea, you are so enthusiastic and passionate about the subjects you teach. It is just wonderful to see and have the opportunity to soak it all up. I just wish all the midwives from Leicester General would have come so that we could all improve our care and practises. What utopia that would be!
