Lotus birth and breastfeedingThe last piece of filming for the lotus birth video I am planning, is now complete. After eight months the placenta I filmed in January was remarkable - very light, crispy and brittle (although it is still quite strong). The salt that still clings to it is like sand.... in fact Justine, who gave birth to the placenta, describes it as being “like an old dried fish you would see on the beach”. We had an interesting chat about Benedict (the baby) and how the lotus birth had influenced his breastfeeding - he was never “hungry”for the breast and Justine feels that this is because he was not starved of food (via the cord) just after the birth. Her first baby, Caitlin, had been born as a brow presentation (vaginally) after a long and difficult birth and she her cord cut before it stopped pulsating, as Justine had agreed to donating cord blood. She was then taken away for some hours, before being reunited with her mother and starting to breastfeed (she is still being tandem fed). Caitlin was always very anxious and dependent on the breast and Justine feels that the initial shock of losing her blood supply at birth, followed by separation may be the underlying cause. Having had a very gentle start with Benedict, she can see the difference between their behaviours very clearly, and although there are undoubtedly some personality factors at work here as well, she is convinced that the way the baby entered the world was significant in both cases. As someone who has never had strong feelings either way about undertaking a lotus birth, following Justine through these last 9 months has been an interesting journey. Zoe, who has also contributed to the video, was also impressed with the value of this approach and found it was easy and quite straightforward. Any technique that enables mother and baby to stay together, with no trauma, completely “at one” with nature, must have merit. Michel Odent has written about the way early separation of mother and baby sets up patterns of aggressive behaviour in adult life (read his fascinating book Primal Health for more information) and his insights have been borne out by Justine and Zoe. I hope to have the video finished before the end of the year so that parents (and midwives) can use it to learn more about this simple procedure. Watch for announcements, in due course. Blessings Posted by: Sarah Buckley on November 2, 2003 08:07 PM Its great to hear that you are doing a video about Lotus Birth. I have had 3 lotus babies, and have some video footage of my son Jacob- now 8- with his placenta attached. If you are wanting anyone to interview, I would be very happy, and there are lots of others who would be excellent, especially Rachana, author of the book.
