The Art of Birthing

Last night I attended the opening of the “The Art of Birthing” exhibition at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery in Caulfield, Melbourne. This event, in aid of the Maternity Coalition, brought together over 80 artists from all over the country in a celebration of birth through art, sculpture and photography. It is a fascinating collection and offers insights into women’s experiences and feelings about birth, from the sublime and joyous to the apparently traumatic. The exhibition will remain in place until Sunday May 18, which includes Mother’s Day - very appropriate! To find out more, and glimpse some of the artworks on display, check out their website.

It was another of those opportunities to catch up with friends who have been involved with birth for many years. A veritable Who’s Who of the birth world. There were also many from different spheres as well, the art critics and gallery owners, artists and their friends and families and media representatives. The ABC will be filming tomorrow and plan a program for Sunday May 11 as a celebration of Mother’s Day.

A wonderful idea and a great way to showcase birth and raise awareness of what it means to women in our society. Congratulations to Jan Harrod for her hard work in bringing it all together!

Hi Andrea,

Yes it has been a while, we have committed to an Art Of Birthing 2005 which will be an even larger event, which we are all looking forward to. I was wondering if you recieved much feedback from this sight regarding the exhibition in May?
Hope your well, I have started a job at Masada and plan to do your birth educators seminar so I will diffinately see you there.
