International Midwives Day

Today, May 5, is International Midwives Day - a special time to celebrate the work of midwives and to reflect on the opportunities and future directions for midwifery around the world.

Here in Australia, midwives in many places will be staging special events. The Midwife of the Year has been announced (Terri Stockdale, and independent practitioner from Tasmania) and television news reports have announced her success. There will be celebratory dinners in many cities and street displays, media interviews and other fun events (e.g. special gifts for the first babies born on the day) are usually included in the program.

It is one very tangible way to improve the profile of midwifery and make midwives themselves more visible to their communities. Community support for midwives is strong once women recognise their value and unique services. Strong alliances and concerted efforts will be needed to make the necessary changes we have planned for midwifery in this country.

I hope that all the midwives reading this have a wonderful day and that you’ll give yourself a big pat on the back for a job well done.
