Corrupting the birth centre concept in Sydney

Back in Sydney after an uneventful flight home (the best way for air travel to be).

One of the first people I spoke to was a midwife colleague who told me that at her local hospital in Sydney, a new Birth Centre is being established. It will have double beds that are hydraulically operated, apparently to facilitate easy access should the woman decide she wants an epidural! That way, she can have all the joys of the Birth Centre and her epidural as well. I suspect the obstetric anaesthetists are feeling a little threatened from the fact that their maternity hospital is closing and this Birth Centre is being established in its place......

Needless to say, I am disgusted at this corruption of our fine tradition of birth centres, and hope that this travesty of midwifery care will not actually come to pass when the unit opens. I know that some birth centres in Australia have pethidine and nitrous oxide available, but it is generally rarely used. We must uphold the notion that these units are for those who wish to have a natural birth and avoid the trappings of the labour ward. Any watering down of this principle will spell the demise of midwifery care as an alternative for those women who don’t want a home birth and would prefer to use hospital facilities, but without the regular medical interventions. I will be following this story with interest.

Meanwhile, we are now preparing for a national tour that starts next week - another in our regular series called “Future Birth”. I am looking forward to welcoming Mavis Kirkham and Caroline Flint to Perth next Monday when they arrive from the UK and to having a wonderful time hosting this series of seminars around the country.
