Paisley (Glasgow) midwifery

I am in Glasgow for an Active Birth workshop. Lots of midwifery happening in Scotland, that’s for sure! Even so, the first midwife I spoke to referred to a “home confinement” she had attended, so that was a problem - language is central to woman centred care as far as I am concerned.

Home birth is still not common in Scotland - cultural beliefs are hard to overcome. Water births are becoming more popular and the new maternity unit to be built here in Paisley will have a pool and baths for women to use in labour. They are all up to speed on water birth practice event though the new unit won’t be open for a while yet.

It’s been a fun day - these midwives know what they want to do and are keen to get on with it. I’ll report some more when we finish up tomorrow.
