Are midwives a dying breed?

My musings over the past few days about the loss of midwifery skills in Ireland reflect a feeling that has been growing in me for some time. It seems that skills are slipping in lots of places as the march towards medicalisation of birth gathers speed, and it may be that soon, only the Birth Centres, midwifery-led units and independent practitioners will be keeping the profession true to its roots.

It is a very sad view, and being a very positive person, is one I hope will prove unfounded. However, I do fear that unless midwives take a good hard look at their individual practice, they will reach a point where reclaiming skills and re-dev eloping trust in normal birth is difficult. Some may feel it is not worth the effort. Even if the whole system is non woman and midwife-friendly, there is still much an individual midwife can do to humanise birth for each woman in her care. All that takes is willingness and sensitivity.
