Pregnant Barbie!I’ve heard that there is a new version of the Barbie Doll coming to Australia soon - the Pregnant Barbie! Apparently she has a “baby” in a tummy that is attached by a magnet - now there’s a lesson on how easy it is to give birth - just pop off the tummy and there it is! I have heard that this doll was removed from sale in the US because it was thought that it might encourage teenage pregnancies (!). The main issue in Australia will be the bottle that is included in the kit and the feeding information that mentions bottles but not breasts. That will have to go or the product will receive very bad press from all the breastfeeding activists here. It will be interesting to see how they plan to market it here! Posted by andrea at January 15, 2003 03:33 PM Not to mentino the fact that it is socialising young girls to expect the baby to be born through the tummy - AKA a caesarean! Posted by: Lynne Staff on January 19, 2003 10:49 AM it looks discusting i mean why are they selling those kind of things at stores? IT looks juvanile. Posted by: sarah walker on March 9, 2003 09:43 AM I think that it is rididculous that they stooped this low and is selling these type of products to children. Even if the Barbie is married or not children will think it is cool to have a baby and want one. Married or not. If barbie has one i can have is how some children will react. Posted by: Diva on April 6, 2003 06:37 AM All I have to say is grow up. If a stupid doll causes teen pregnancies, parents are not doing their jobs. Also if barbie can go to the moon or be a vetranarian or pop star, than why not a mother? Children already play house and this is just another toy they can play with. Also I think with a war going on in Iraq, we have better things to worry about. Posted by: Erin on April 8, 2003 07:40 AM I think that having a Pregnant Barbie is crazy. So they put a ring on her finger and say she's married and it's "OK" to have a baby. Kids mimic what their idols do. If Barbie is "married" WITH a ring on her finger... then where is Ken..or whoever her husband is? & also why is there just ONE male doll? Another issue exists...it seems that the Lingerie Barbie led up TO the Pregnant Barbie & therefore it sends out a message to children all over that it's "OK" to have a baby because BARBIE did. It's not whether parents are "doing their job" or not...parents aren't PAID to have children and raise them..they can't always CONTROL when their children do something and what they're doing Posted by: Daizy Kumar on April 15, 2003 01:56 PM I bought the doll today at a toysrus in Irvine, Ca I think it is great. I jaut had a baby girl and when she is big enough, I will give it to her. I think that it is a great illustration for where babies come from with out all the gory details. If parents do their jobs then your child will not get the idea that having a baby is alright "OK" because Barbie does. That is ridiculous. Give kids more credit then that. On the box it states that Midge and Alan are married and they have a family and are having a new baby girl , they already have a little boy. So it is a Happy family, What could be wrong with that? Posted by: angela on April 18, 2003 02:25 PM I think it is crazy the way everyone is putting down the pregnant Barbie. Frankly I'm tired of all the high fashon, cooler then life Barbies on the market. I think this is a very cool toy for any little girl or boy who is expecting a new sibling. It is a great way to show them how a baby fits inside the Mommy and let them roll play the arrival of a new baby in the house. There is also a father and son that is sold seperately that is the rest of Midges family. I do not think that teenagers are going to think it is easy to have a baby just because they played with a pregnant Barbie who has a detachable tummy when they were little. I certainly hope that my daughter doesn't feel that she has to mimmic the traits that some of the other Barbies portray, such as being really thin and always wearing make-up. At least Midge has freckles. The only problem I do have with the Midge barbie is that she should come with nursing mother fashions. I do not think she should have obvious nipples, but her shirt should open so kids can pretend she is nursing. Posted by: Sandy on April 21, 2003 06:22 AM There is absolutely nothing wrong with a pregnant barbie I think that it teaches kids lessons and it also comes with a happy family. It's a good example and it doesn't matter cause its still would get treated the same. It would still get its head popped off. We sale them here at our stores and pregnant clothes and the rest of the stuff and people likes it. Posted by: JaTonya White on May 2, 2003 06:34 AM like it or not children are going to pretend barbie is going to have a baby its just human nature. This heaps aid children adjusting to siblings arrival just like books do. And it is ok to have babies out of wedlock this is not the olden days its acceptable. if a child is brought up on values thinking that they have to be married before children then this will show in their role playing.(plus there is many wedding barbies and kens) Maybe a few of you should read some developmental childrens texts and realise that their play is based on their surroundings and morals they are brought up with. As for the comment for caesarean births do you really want the baby to come out from the dolls birth canal?? just to complain about that as well 'its too graphical'. Breastfeeding?? If the child is aware that form of feeding they will bring the baby to the chest!! It has one you know or did you need mattel to make nipples as well??? This is all non sense no wonder there are so many teenage pregancies you arent teaching your children sex ed at a young age, making your children aware prevents things like this. Go for it mattel if the parents wont teach it the go ahead!!! Posted by: Vanessa on May 29, 2003 12:55 PM i think it is wrong for a pregnant barbies to come out in stores and it seams like it would teach little kids to go have babies at barbies age she looks about 18 so i agree with most of you who think it is wrong and disgusting Posted by: desirae on August 28, 2003 11:24 AM Desirae I don't think you know what you're talking about. First of all I wrote to Mattel telling them that they should make a barbie like that but they said they could'nt so I just want you to know that even though I'm only 12 I still think you're wrong. Posted by: Jala on October 12, 2003 03:49 PM i think you are making a big deal out of nothing its just a doll for 3-5 year olds as if its going to make them have babies at a young age. I think we should be more worried about boys playing with guns and war toys. Posted by: martha on June 2, 2004 04:55 AM i always wanted barbie happy family.but i don't like barbie that much. Posted by: irene on July 9, 2004 07:46 AM I think that it is HIDIOUS that they would do this to kids. I mean whats next?! Playboy barbie? Porn barbie? I mean why would that do to little kids? I know that the barbie industry has been continously dropping over the past 6 years, but i mean PREGNANT barbie? Im digusted. I am 12, and if i had that when i was younger i would have been pregnant! geez. i am dumbfounded! (Whats up with the message posted on jan 21?)
