Lotus Birth

Attended another birth this week, this time at home, at the request of parents who wanted the event videotaped for posterity. A second baby, and all went very well. The mother had decided that she wanted a water birth and a lotus birth. In the end, there wasn’t time to fill the pool and although there was about 30 cm of water in the pool which she did use for comfort (to an extent), the baby wasn’t able to pass through it on his way to his mother’s arms.

The lotus birth aspect is interesting. This is not something I have ever had much to do with and although there is a very interesting book on the subject most of the information about this approach to third stage management has been anecdotal.

I have videotaped the placenta is detail and have already visited to see how things are going after the first 24 hours. I will check again tomorrow. If the videotape footage is OK, we might consider making it into a short instructional video for midwives and parents. Will keep you posted.
